Three doors cover most of what a day out needs: a parma and a cold one on the Noojee Hotel’s deck over the Latrobe, a fire and a proper bistro at the old Outpost Toolshed, or all-day breakfast and the town general store at the Little Red Duck when you just need a coffee and a carton of milk. Not a big scene — the right one.

Stay a night or a season — a brick cabin a stumble from the pub, cabins behind the old Outpost with the bistro next door, an adults-only B&B up the tourist road, or a stone homestead with room for eight. Most of it sits under the mountain ash, minutes from the river, and none of it is far from anything. In Noojee, nothing is.
A forest campground on the road up to Mt Baw Baw, named for the old logging checking station once sited nearby — a base camp for alpine walks and drives.
